Why Is This Important?

During 2021, 1,156 male and 632 female New Jersey residents were diagnosed with kidney and renal pelvis cancer. Cancer of the kidney and renal pelvis is more common among people over 50, and occurs more often among men than women. The risk of kidney cancer among smokers is about 40% higher than among nonsmokers.

Incidence rate of invasive kidney and renal pelvis cancer for a defined population in a specified time interval. Rates are age-adjusted to the 2000 U.S. Standard Population. Rates are per 100,000 population.

How Are We Doing?

Between 1990 and 2021, the age-adjusted kidney and renal pelvis cancer rate in males increased from 15.5 cases to 21.3 cases per 100,000. In females the increase was from 7.5 cases to 10.2 cases per 100,000. The reasons for the increase are not clear, though increased use of diagnostic imaging techniques may allow the finding of more kidney cancers. The lifetime risk of developing kidney and renal pelvis cancer is 1 in 43 for men and 1 in 73 for women.
