Why Is This Important?

Studies have found that people with disabilities are less likely to get preventive health care services they need to stay healthy.^1^ In addition, people with disabilities may have trouble finding a job, going to school, or getting around outside their homes.[https://www.bls.gov/opub/ted/2015/people-with-a-disability-less-likely-to-have-completed-a-bachelors-degree.htm ^2^]

Data Notes

For cognitive difficulty, ambulatory difficulty, and self-care difficulty, <18 only includes persons aged 5 to 17. Children under 5 are not included in these measures.

How the Measure is Calculated

  • Numerator:

    Estimated number of civilian noninstitutionalized persons in each age group with a given disability
  • Denominator:

    Estimated total civilian noninstitutionalized population in each age group

Data Issues

The U.S. Census Bureau did not release its standard 1-year estimates from the 2020 American Community Survey because of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on data collection.
