Why Is This Important?

Suicide is the 3rd leading cause of death among New Jersey teens.

Definition

Actual suicide attempts among high school students in the 12 months prior to survey, regardless of whether medical attention was required

Data Notes

This is Healthy New Jersey 2020 (HNJ2020) Objective IVP-4.

Data for Whites, Blacks, and Asians do not include Hispanics. Hispanic ethnicity includes persons of any race.

Survey is conducted in odd-numbered years only. ** 2007 Asian sample size too small to calculate a reliable rate. 2015 and 2017 NJ survey data not available.

Data Source

New Jersey Student Health Survey, Office of Student Support Services, Division of Student Services and Career Readiness, New Jersey Department of Education
(http://www.nj.gov/education/students/yrbs/)

How the Measure is Calculated

  • Numerator:

Respondents who answered one or more times to the question: "During the past 12 months, how many times did you actually attempt suicide?"
  • Denominator:

Total number of survey respondents in grades 9-12

Data Issues

In 2015 and 2017, the New Jersey Student Health Survey was unable to obtain the number of student responses needed to reach the 60% response rate required by the CDC to be able to weight the data to be representative of the New Jersey high school student population.
