Why Is This Important?

Tobacco use is usually initiated during adolescence. More than 90% of adult smokers begin smoking before 18 years of age. Youth use of tobacco in any form is unsafe. Youth who use multiple tobacco products are at higher risk for developing nicotine dependence and might be more likely to continue using tobacco into adulthood.1

Definition

Percentage of high school students (grade 9-12) who have used tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, bidis, electronic cigarettes) in the 30 days preceding the survey

Measurement of electronic cigarette use began in 2012.

Data Notes

The survey is only conducted in even-numbered years and was not conducted in 2010.

How the Measure is Calculated

  • Numerator:

    Number of high school students who have used tobacco (cigarettes, cigars, smokeless tobacco, bidis, electronic cigarettes) in the 30 days preceding the survey
  • Denominator:

    Total number of high school student survey respondents
